No matter which side you choose, Stradbroke Island is filled with exceptional beauty!

Nestled off the coast of Brisbane, Stradbroke Island, also affectionally called ‘Straddie’ by locals, is a place full of unforgettable adventures and blissed-out breaks. But there are two separate Stradbroke destinations to visit North and South Stradbroke Island.

  • North Side

    North Stradbroke Island

North Stradbroke Island is by far the more popular destination out of the two. This section was once a part of the main Stradbroke Island. But after a storm in 1896, the section was separated from South Stradbroke Island, forming the Jumpinpin Channel. Regardless of whether you’re looking for a relaxing break amongst the stunning scenery or a more upbeat adventure, North Stradbroke Island has you covered. Discover the incredible wildlife of the area, including Australia favourites such as kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. If you’re visiting during the migration period, you can even spot pods of whales cruising along the island’s coastline from the shore. Learn about the Quandamooka people, the island’s traditional owners. Join one of the guided walks through the bushland or visit the Salt Water Murris’ Art Gallery for some history and art. If you are thinking about hitting the beach why not do a scuba dive? The marine life is bursting in the shore’s underwater wonderland, with crystal-clear waters making a perfect atmosphere for a scuba dive.

  • South Side

    South Stradbroke Island

South Stradbroke Island is much less developed, with fewer tourists and locals roaming around. If you prefer the quiet life, the South is perfect for you, as it is filled with unspoiled scenery and tranquil activities. Big resorts aren’t offered on the side so your best bet would be camping or staying at the smaller houses and hotels scattering the coast. Immerse yourself in the local life as you visit the charming cafes and bars. Bushwalk through the area and discover the Livistona rainforest, freshwater marshlands, and melaleuca wetlands.

Verdict

The place you choose for your adventure depends entirely on your holiday needs. If you are interested in activities left and right, jamming your days with endless activities and atttractions, the North Island may be more for you. However, if crowds and busy days aren’t your cup of tea, the South island’s quiet serenity is your best bet!
