The Tanglalooma Wreckage in Moreton Island
The Tangalooma Wrecks are a result of the government purposefully sinking ships to create a dam around the bay. This restricts water flow and reduces any currents, making the shallower water near the bay better for boats to anchor down. As a result, this makes the area safer to swim around and snorkel in.
Your shipwreck snorkelling around Tangalooma adventure starts in Moreton Island! Think clear blue turquoise waters, and plenty of fish to spot under the water.
The Tangalooma Wrecks: Theultimate Brisbane shipwreck snorkelling spot
What’s cooler than seeing a shipwreck? Snorkelling around a shipwreck! Time to enjoy one of the most unique snorkelling experiences in Queensland.
The brown rust of the shipwrecks contrasts dramatically with the aqua blue ocean water. You’ll get a wholly unique snorkelling experience – when else can you snorkel around a shipwreck in the middle of the ocean? This is a truly iconic part of Moreton Island and makes the experience completely memorable.
Plus, there are heaps of diverse marine life to see! The wreckage has created a microbiome of fish, barnacles, and many different species in the ocean.
Safety at the Tangalooma Wrecks
It’s a 15-20 minute walk up the beach – all the way from the beach entrance to the wreckage. However, we wouldn’t recommend trying to snorkel by yourself with your own equipment, for safety reasons.
It’s highly recommended to do a snorkel tour of the Tangalooma Wrecks instead of going by yourself. Here’s why going by yourself can be a bit risky:
- It’s an unpatrolled beach, so there are no lifeguards.
- There is sometimes a strong current between the wreckage and the beach.
- If jet skis or boats are passing through, then this may cause big ripples or waves in the water. These waves can be forceful near these big metal hazards in the water!
As the currents and conditions of the water can be unpredictable, it’s highly recommended that you take a tour for the sake of safety!
