The Wheel of Brisbane, Queensland

The Brisbane Wheel is an iconic landmark whose silhouette stands out against the city’s busy skyline. Located at the popular South Bank, the wheel is one of the best ways to enjoy spectacular 360-degree views of Brisbane from a height of 60 metres.

The Wheel of Brisbane is open throughout the day, where you can spot all the major sights in the city, and at night, when you can watch the sun set and see the city light up! Each gondola carries up to 8 people, giving you the chance to share this wonderful experience with your family and friends.

How the Wheel came to be

The wheel was built in 2008 as part of the 20th anniversary of the World Expo 88, as well as the 150th anniversary of the State of Queensland 1859–2009 celebrations. It transformed the Expo 88, creating a striking attraction at the northern entrance to South Bank Parklands. It remained a permanent fixture in the city after this, due to its impressive popularity.

About the Wheel’s Gondola ride

The wheel is a perfect sightseeing activity for everyone. From young to old, from tourist to local, everyone enjoys the breathtaking views of the city. Each of the 42 gondolas feature climate-control, an audio system, 360-degree views, and can hold up to 8 people and 600kgs in weight. The entire wheel experience lasts around 10 to 15 minutes and includes a gut-wrenching pause at the very top.

The Design of the Wheel of Brisbane

The wheel’s designer, Ronald Bussink, and his company, Wheels of Excellence, are the global market leaders in the wheel-making industry and have conceptualised and created some of the most famous observation wheels in the world, including ones in Kuala Lumpur, Paris, and Niagara Falls.

Though each gondola holds up to 8 people and 600kgs in weight, it must always be balanced.
